Understand the Effects of THC and CBD

Cannabis has been proven to provide relief to patients with a multitude of illnesses. Understanding the basics of the growing and processing of the plants will help patients choose the best cannabis-infused product for their illness.

What Is Cannabis?Cannabis Flower

Cannabis is the name of the plant that produces leaves and flowers that are cured and used as what we know as “cannabis” or “marijuana.” Medicinal cannabis is the same genus as hemp, and they both have psychoactive qualities. The difference in the products is in the methods of growing and breeding. Hemp is typically grown and used for its fiber while cannabis is bred to have larger buds and more psychoactive compounds.

Why does Cannabis affect the body?

Parts of the cannabis plant mimic a chemical system within our bodies that reduces harm and keeps our health in balance. The system is called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The chemicals produced by the body that control the ECS are endocannabinoids.

Endocannabinoids keep critical biological functions in balance. They control sleep, appetite, the immune system, and more. Endocannabinoids fix problems when the body moves into a state of stress. Cannabis can be useful in helping manage crises due to the way it mimics endocannabinoids.

Why is cannabis beneficial in treating so many different illnesses?

The cannabinoids within cannabis plants are highly effective in treating pain and inflammation. Most, if not all, illnesses come with inflammation or pain. The 400 active chemicals within a cannabis plant work together to provide a variety of therapeutic benefits to the body. Strains containing different levels of specific cannabinoids provide benefits that range from protecting damaged brain cells to controlling muscle spasticity.

What Are THC and CBD?

The two most well-known cannabinoids are THC and CBD. They, like other cannabinoids, must be heated in order to convert into an active cannabinoid.

Benefits of THC

THC is the primary psychoactive component in cannabis. It provides the effect users call the “high.” THC has been shown to act as a strong anti-inflammatory and pain killer. It can also reduce plaques in the brain that cause Alzheimer’s. It may also be used as a bronchodilator, anti-spasmodic, muscle relaxant, neuroprotectant, and antioxidant.

Benefits of CBD

CBD is the most common cannabinoid in hemp and the second most common in cannabis. CBD-rich strains of cannabis provide medical benefits without the “high” feeling of euphoria or lethargy. CBD is used most effectively as an anti-anxiety, anti-convulsant, anti-emetic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-depressant, and antipsychotic.
